Rehabilitation

The rehabilitation process is an important part of your recovery after knee and joint replacement surgeries and will be crucial in you getting back on your feet so you can take part in an active lifestyle once again. Physiotherapy and strengthening of your muscles before and after surgery can help you heal more rapidly from your joint replacement surgery and it will also improve your chances of successful pain relief in the long term.

Early rehabilitation improves recovery

Rehabilitation begins almost immediately after surgery, and within the first 24 hours you will begin standing and walking using a crutch, stick or frame alongside your physiotherapist. You will be provided with exercises that will help strengthen your muscles and help to get you mobile as quickly as possible. Your physiotherapist will also demonstrate how to get in and out of bed and move safely with your frame, crutches, or stick. Dedicated and knowledgeable staff will help you with finding your independence again with everyday hygiene tasks such as bathing, dressing and using the toilet.

You may have temporary restrictions on your physical activity for the first few weeks. These may include not bending your hip more than 90°, not twisting or pivoting on your hip or knee, taking smaller steps than usual and not crossing or forcing legs to move in a way that is uncomfortable or feels restricted. You may need to avoid low chairs but an occupational therapist can help find equipment you may need around your home in order to stick to these temporary rules.

General guidance is that by 6 weeks, in most cases, regular activity can resume. Taking your time and building up your strength is key in your rehabilitation. Physiotherapy may be beneficial in strengthening muscles to support your new joint and will certainly help to give you the best chance of a full recovery after your surgery.
